How this Shift Differential Calculator works
The calculator applies straightforward pay arithmetic to the values you enter. Inputs are editable so the estimate can reflect your own schedule and pay arrangement.
Formula and assumptions
The displayed result is based only on the entered pay rate, hours and premium inputs. It does not automatically add federal, state or local taxes, benefits or other payroll deductions.
Important limitations
Premium pay is not automatically required for every night, weekend, holiday or shift. Worker classification, collective bargaining agreements, employer policies, federal law and state/local rules can change actual pay.
Sources and methodology
U.S. Department of Labor wage-and-hour guidance is the general reference for overtime concepts; employer policies and state/local law can differ. Last reviewed October 17, 2026.
