Which UK VAT calculator should you use?
Different VAT calculations answer different business questions. A registration threshold check is not the same as a VAT return calculation, and scheme eligibility is different from estimating VAT payable.
1. Checking whether VAT registration is required
Use the VAT Registration Threshold Calculator if you want to compare taxable turnover with the compulsory registration threshold.
It considers the rolling 12-month turnover test and the expected next-30-day test.
Open VAT Registration Calculator2. Estimating Flat Rate Scheme VAT
Use the Flat Rate Scheme Calculator if your business uses the scheme and you know the applicable flat-rate percentage.
The calculation is generally based on VAT-inclusive turnover multiplied by the relevant scheme rate.
Open Flat Rate Scheme Calculator3. Checking Cash Accounting eligibility
Use the Cash Accounting Eligibility Calculator to assess the basic turnover conditions for using the scheme.
Cash Accounting generally changes when VAT is accounted for in relation to payments received and made.
Open Cash Accounting Calculator4. Estimating VAT payable or reclaimable
Use the VAT Return Calculator when you know your output VAT and recoverable input VAT.
The tool estimates the net VAT balance using a simplified calculation and adjustments.

Important UK VAT thresholds and scheme rules
UK businesses may need to consider several different turnover thresholds depending on whether they are registering for VAT or choosing a VAT accounting scheme.
VAT registration threshold
The compulsory UK VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of VAT taxable turnover. Businesses should monitor turnover over rolling 12-month periods and consider the separate next-30-day test.
Flat Rate Scheme
The Flat Rate Scheme generally has a £150,000 expected taxable turnover joining threshold, excluding VAT, along with other eligibility conditions.
The scheme generally requires businesses to review the relevant £230,000 VAT-inclusive leaving threshold.
VAT Cash Accounting Scheme
The Cash Accounting Scheme generally has a £1.35 million taxable turnover joining threshold and a £1.6 million leaving threshold, subject to HMRC conditions.
These are different tests and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Understanding VAT for UK businesses
Value Added Tax (VAT) is charged on many goods and services supplied in the UK. VAT-registered businesses normally account for VAT on taxable sales and may recover eligible VAT on business purchases.
The standard UK VAT rate is 20%. Certain supplies qualify for the reduced 5% rate or the zero rate, while some supplies are exempt. The correct VAT treatment depends on the goods, services and circumstances.
What is output VAT?
Output VAT is VAT due on taxable sales and certain other transactions. It is one component of the amount reported to HMRC.
What is input VAT?
Input VAT is VAT incurred on purchases. Businesses may be able to recover eligible input VAT, but restrictions and special rules can apply.
Why are VAT accounting schemes different?
Different schemes affect how VAT is calculated or when it is accounted for. For example, the Flat Rate Scheme uses prescribed percentages, while Cash Accounting generally relates VAT accounting to payment timing.
Choosing a scheme should involve considering the business's turnover, customers, costs and relevant HMRC rules.
Simple UK VAT calculation examples
Example 1: VAT payable
A VAT-registered business has £12,000 output VAT and £7,000 recoverable input VAT for a period.
£12,000 − £7,000 = £5,000
The estimated net VAT payable is £5,000 before any additional adjustments.
Example 2: Flat Rate Scheme payment
A business has VAT-inclusive turnover of £60,000 and an applicable flat-rate percentage of 12.5%.
£60,000 × 12.5% = £7,500
The estimated scheme VAT payment is £7,500 before applicable adjustments. The percentage is illustrative and is not suitable for every business.
Example 3: VAT registration threshold
A business has £94,000 in VAT taxable turnover over the preceding rolling 12 months.
Because the figure exceeds £90,000, the business should review the compulsory VAT registration rules and deadlines.
