How this calculator works
Tamil Nadu bills most domestic consumers every two months using telescopic slabs: each block of units is charged at its own rate, and a number of units at the start of the cycle is free. The calculator removes the free units, charges the rest slab by slab at the rates you enter, adds any fixed or other charges and shows the monthly equivalent.
Bill formula
Energy charge = Σ (units falling in each slab above the free units × that slab’s rate)
Bill = energy charge + fixed and other charges
Worked example
For 350 units in a bi-monthly cycle with 100 free units: units 101–200 are 100 × ₹2.35 = ₹235 and units 201–350 are 150 × ₹4.70 = ₹705. The energy charge is ₹940.00, which is about ₹470 per month and ₹2.69 per unit on average.
Important note on tariffs
The pre-filled slab rates and 100 free units follow the domestic tariff structure widely published for Tamil Nadu. Tariffs are revised by the regulator and government announcements can change free-unit rules (for example, news reports in 2026 describe 200 free units for households below 500 units in a cycle). Check the latest rates on your bill or the official Tamil Nadu electricity board website and edit the boxes to match. Fuel cost adjustment, electricity duty and fixed charges vary by connection, so add them in the last box if you want them included.

Frequently asked questions
How is the TNEB bill calculated?
Units consumed in the bi-monthly cycle are charged slab by slab after deducting the free units, then fixed charges and any other adjustments are added.
Is the first 100 units free in Tamil Nadu?
Domestic consumers have received 100 free units per bi-monthly cycle under the state subsidy. Recent announcements may extend this for some households, so edit the free-units box to match your connection.
Why does my actual bill differ from this estimate?
Your bill may include fixed charges, fuel cost adjustment, duty, arrears or a different billing period. Add known extras in the “Fixed and other charges” box.
Can I use it for monthly consumption?
The slabs are defined for a two-month cycle. For a monthly estimate, double the units, calculate, and divide the bill by two.
Planning estimate only. Confirm tariffs, free-unit eligibility and charges with your latest bill or the official Tamil Nadu electricity board.
